Sleep And Your Child

in Dr. Jim's FastBraiin

Introduction:

Welcome to Dr. Jim's FastBraiin. I'm Dr. Jim Poole, and I definitely have a FastBraiin! Today, let's explore the topic of sleep.

We all love sleep and sometimes dread going to bed or getting up. However, getting up is exciting because it means we have a whole day ahead of us.

In this episode, we will focus on the importance of sleep for children and discuss some practical tips to help them develop healthy sleep habits.

The Importance of Sleep:

When we don't get enough sleep, we can feel tired and irritable throughout the day. Think about those times when you've spent all night doing something or when you've been on a trip and couldn't get much sleep. How did you function the next day? Most likely, you complained and felt terrible. Well, the same goes for your FastBraiin child. Just like adults, your child may be struggling with getting enough sleep.

Disruptions to Your Child's Sleep:

Many FastBraiin children are not getting enough sleep. They go to bed with a cell phone in their room and wake up in the middle of the night to use it. This is the prime time for kids to play on their cell phones, use Instagram, and engage in texting. This habit continues throughout the teenage years.

Late-Night Snacks and Sleep Quality:

Another factor that disrupts your child's sleep is late-night snacking. If you give your child sugary snacks before bedtime, it can keep them from sleeping soundly. They may fall asleep quickly but then wake up later. Therefore, it's important to avoid giving sugary snacks to your child before bed. It's essential to pay attention to your child's late-night eating habits and avoid snacks packed with sugar. By doing so, you can help them maintain a more consistent and restful sleep throughout the night.

Tips for Better Sleep:

If you want to help your child go to bed without a fight and ensure they get quality sleep, here are a couple of tips:

  1. Keep the cell phone out of the bedroom: Encourage your child to leave their phone outside the bedroom at night. This will prevent them from being tempted to use it and will create a more peaceful sleep environment.
  2. Avoid sugary late-night snacks: Instead of offering sugary snacks to your child before bed, choose healthier options like a light, protein-rich snack. This will help promote better sleep quality.

Conclusion:

Sleep plays a vital role in your child's overall well-being, physical health, and cognitive function. By addressing the two key factors discussed above, you can significantly improve your child's sleep quality and help them go to bed without a fight. By limiting cell phone usage and avoiding sugary late-night snacks, you can help your child get the sleep they need to thrive.

I hope you found these tips helpful and consider joining our FastBraiin program, where we delve deeper into the topic of sleep and provide additional strategies to support your child's sleep routine.

Sleep well, and have a great day!

[00:00:00] Dr. Jim Poole, MD: Welcome to Dr. Jim's FastBraiin. I'm Dr. Jim Poole and I have definitely FastBraiin! Today we're going to talk about sleep. We all love sleep and sometimes we hate to go to bed and we certainly hate to get up. But getting up is exciting because it means we've got a whole day ahead of us. Now let's talk about our child for just a second.

[00:00:23] Now, when you end up kind of spending all night doing something or you've been on a trip and you don't get much sleep, how do you function the next day? We go to work and we complain. We go, oh my gosh, I was up all night. Or, uh, no matter what it is. Or, oh, I was traveling. Or, oh, I feel so terrible. Well, guess what?

[00:00:45] Your FastBraiin child is not sleeping much and they're going to bed with a cell phone in their room and they're getting up and waking and doing. That is the number one time that kids will play on their cell phone and do their Instagram [00:01:00] and all the different texting and so forth. And this goes all the way through the teenage years.

[00:01:05] Also, they've been hyped up if you've given them a snack before bedtime and it's all full of sugar and that keeps them from sleeping. They may go to sleep quickly, but then they'll wake up. So the two things that I want you to really look at is keeping the cell phone out of the bedroom and making sure that late-night snacks are not full of sugar.

[00:01:27] Okay, I hope to see you at our FastBraiin programs, and we're going to go in-depth on sleep and the importance and some things you can do to help your child go to bed without a fight. Okay, have a great day. Thank you.
